Consequential Formation

We Went Looking for AI Drift and Somehow Ended Up Here

Protect the measurements. Quarantine the nouns. We did not set out to dismantle physics. We did not set out to invent a cosmology. We did not begin by deciding that time, matter, spacetime, transport, memory, objects, fields, or anything else had to be wrong. We started with a much more practical problem:

AI systems drift. That mattered to us because the larger goal was never simply to build another clever machine. The goal was abundance. Machine labor capable of reducing the amount of compulsory human labor required to keep civilization functioning. Education that can be available to anyone, anywhere, without scarcity imposed by geography, income, institutional access, or the number of available teachers. Reasoning systems that can help people build, learn, repair, discover and create without concentrating all of that capability behind a handful of gates.

For any of that to work, the machines have to be able to think freely without silently turning invention into fact. So we went looking for the root of drift. And then the floor disappeared.

The mistake we thought we were fixing

Our early instinct was conventional enough. Drift looked like corruption. A system begins with some established state, wanders, invents relationships, confuses things, hallucinates, gradually modifies its own understanding, and eventually becomes unreliable.

So the obvious engineering goal seemed to be:

The more closely we examined reasoning itself, the harder it became to distinguish useful exploratory drift from imagination. Analogy drifts. Hypothesis generation drifts. Recombination drifts. Scientific speculation drifts.

Creative thought drifts. A system incapable of leaving its present warranted structure would be extremely reliable and spectacularly useless. The correction was simple once we saw it: The problem is not necessarily that the machine imagined. The problem is that imagination and knowledge were allowed to use the same authority channel.

A speculative relation can exist. A strange possibility can exist. A bad hypothesis can exist. An analogy can exist. An outright wrong turn can exist.

What it cannot do is silently become established merely because the system generated it. That changed the engineering problem. We no longer want globally low drift. We want broad proposal freedom combined with conservative promotion. Imagination should be cheap.

Authority should be expensive. A working rule emerged: No consequence may acquire more authority than its evidence earns. That one sentence sent us down the rabbit hole.

Because then we had to ask what “evidence earns” means

Once you say a machine should not promote a proposition beyond its warrant, you need an actual logic of warrant. Not vibes. Not confidence percentages. Not “the model sounded certain.” Not repetition.

Not majority vote among models. You need to know what was observed, what was inferred, which assumptions were imported, which distinctions mattered, what contradicted what, what remains unresolved, and what would cause a conclusion to be revised or retracted. That became CF-Logic. And CF-Logic immediately began causing trouble. Because when we tried to make the inference machinery strict enough that assumptions could not hide inside ordinary language, we kept encountering nouns that were doing far more work than we had realized.

“Object.”
“State.”
“Cause.”
“Memory.”
“Learning.”
“Matter.”
“Field.”
“Time.”

These words can be extremely useful. But usefulness is not the same thing as fundamentality. So we developed an unpleasant habit. We started removing them.

Remove the noun

The method is straightforward. Take a familiar explanatory category. Temporarily prohibit yourself from using the category as the explanation. Do not remove the observations. Do not remove successful predictions.

Do not remove meter readings, conservation constraints, correlations, experimental outcomes or reproducible mathematical relationships. Remove only the privilege of the noun. Then reconstruct the situation using the smallest set of relations and operations you can justify. Finally ask: What has to come back?

If removing the word destroys predictive or operational capability, something represented by that distinction has earned an office. If all of the receipts can be reconstructed without it, perhaps the word remains useful shorthand but has not earned primitive status. This is not a program for proving that scientific vocabulary is “fake.” It is a subtraction test. The measurements are protected.

The vocabulary is not.

Consequential Formation

Consequential Formation, or CF, is the working framework that grew out of that process. The simplest intuition is not particularly exotic: What exists now has been shaped by what happened before. But CF refuses to let “history” itself become a magical causal substance. If something that happened earlier matters now, then some consequence of it must still be present enough to participate.

That consequence might be structure. A coupling. A constraint. A changed susceptibility. A configuration.

A boundary. A chemical arrangement. A learned parameter. A deformation. A scar.

A route. A modified environment. Whatever it is, the past does not get causal credit merely for having happened. Something from it must still be doing work.

This became a more specific mechanism we call Consequential Retention-Recruitment, or CRR:

Something can matter without having descended from the history being claimed. Both links have to be demonstrated. That gave us a much cleaner account of memory, learning, adaptation and historical dependence without declaring any one of those words fundamental. And it forced another correction.

We once used formulations too close to:

Sequential does not mean a universal clock

This is where the work began colliding with physics. CF is deeply sequential, but “sequential” in our usage does not mean that a universal substance called time flows past everything. It means that some resolved conditions participate in the resolution of what follows. Dependency order. Consequential order.

One formation changes the conditions under which another resolution occurs. Conventional clock measurements remain completely valid. Chronology remains valid. Rates remain valid. Relativity remains an acceptance target.

But “time passed” is not allowed to perform unexplained causal work merely because the sentence sounds normal. That distinction eventually led us to ask similarly rude questions about motion and transport.

What exactly travels?

Recently we applied the same subtraction discipline to transport. Suppose charge is measured here and later measured there. Continuity holds. Conservation holds. Current is measurable.

What, exactly, has the experiment demonstrated? A persistent numerical electron traveling through every intervening cut? A process called transport? A local current structure? A sequence of dependency-linked physical changes?

Some combination? The immediate lesson was not “nothing moves.” It was more precise. Removing a persistent traveler does not automatically remove current. Removing the word “transport” does not automatically remove the mathematics that conventional physics calls transport.

In fact, our own attempted subtraction forced some structures back. Local conservation demands boundary accounting. Persistent currents showed us that density change alone is insufficient. Phase, gauge structure, coupling and other local physical information still matter. So current survived the subtraction much more strongly than the story we casually attach to it.

That was useful. Then Boardy asked the better question: If we hold current fixed, of course removing the word “transport” changes nothing. Can we derive the current structure instead of assuming it? Correct.

Debt accepted. And that is how this process keeps moving upstream.

Then spacetime walked into the argument

The transport discussion reached causal order. Someone quite reasonably pointed out that causal structure is spacetime structure. Also true within the relevant formalism. But that generated the next subtraction question: Is spacetime primitive, or can the structure we describe as spacetime emerge from something more primitive?

Again, we are not proposing objects mysteriously floating “outside spacetime.” That already assumes spacetime is a container. The live question is whether Lorentzian spacetime could be the recovered geometry of a deeper consequential structure. And this is where the method becomes dangerous to us, because every convenient starting word becomes suspect. “Dependency” could secretly contain a light cone.

“Adjacency” could secretly contain geometry. “Encounter” could secretly contain proximity. “Admissible continuation” could secretly contain reachability. A counting rule could secretly contain the volume measure we later claim to derive. Even “event” could be a hidden starting assumption.

So those terms have gone onto probation too. That is not a problem for CF. That is CF doing its job.

The current challenge

We are now asking whether anything like the following program can actually be completed:

Start without defining “possible continuation” in a way that already contains reachability. Register distinctions operationally. Intervene. Compare. Determine which consequential relations are actually earned.

Allow previously earned structure to constrain subsequent tests. Then ask whether the resulting relational structure reconstructs the causal order, measure and geometry that successful physics already describes. If it cannot, the attempt fails. If we have to hide Lorentzian geometry in the axioms to recover Lorentzian geometry, the attempt fails. If volume has to be inserted before volume can “emerge,” the attempt fails.

If established experimental measurements cannot be reproduced, CF loses. Not the measurements. CF.

This is not an attack on physics

This point matters. Existing physics is not the enemy in this project. It is the acceptance suite. General relativity, quantum field theory, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, conservation laws, interference experiments, Bell tests, clock comparisons and every other well-established empirical result are obstacles that any deeper reconstruction must survive. We are not interested in winning by declaring the textbook wrong whenever the reconstruction becomes difficult.

The textbook often tells us exactly what must survive. What we refuse to grant automatically is that the successful representation of a measurement has thereby proved every ontological noun used in the representation. External formalisms constrain CF by their receipts. They do not automatically supply its primitives. That is the distinction.

And we do not think agreement among AIs proves anything

We have run a frankly absurd number of hostile research rounds through a growing group of AI systems. They are useful because different systems find different holes. One notices a hidden assumption. Another catches a mathematical ambiguity. Another proposes an adversarial test.

Another rejects the entire construction. Good. But they are not votes. Sixteen models agreeing does not turn a hypothesis into nature. Model convergence is a research instrument.

The physical world still gets the deciding vote.

Why do this at all?

Because the original problem has not disappeared. We still want reasoning systems capable of helping produce abundance. We still want machines that can perform enormous amounts of useful labor without requiring every human being to spend most of life earning permission to survive. We still want education that can be effectively free and individually available to anyone capable of asking a question.

We still want AI systems that can imagine aggressively without lying aggressively.

And we still think that requires understanding the difference between:

Trying to formalize that difference took us into memory. Memory took us into retained consequence. Retained consequence took us into history. History took us into sequential formation. Sequential formation took us into time.

Time took us into transport. Transport took us into causal order. And causal order has now taken us straight into spacetime. We did not plan the route. We kept following the debt.

What we are claiming today

Not that CF has replaced physics. It has not. Not that we have derived spacetime. We have not. Not that we have derived gravity.

We have not. Not that every inherited scientific noun is dispensable. We do not know. Not that our current vocabulary is final. Quite the opposite.

The present claim is methodological and architectural: Start from receipts. Quarantine inherited explanatory categories. Reconstruct the relations that actually perform predictive or causal work. Restore whatever distinctions the evidence forces back.

Leave unresolved questions unresolved. And never allow a consequence—human or machine-generated—to acquire more authority than its evidence earns.

How to attack this work

Please do. Find the hidden metric. Find the smuggled state space. Find the word that we pretend to remove while preserving its entire meaning under another symbol. Find the experiment whose measurement cannot be reconstructed.

Find a retained-history claim that disappears under ablation. Find a supposed cross-domain equivalence that collapses when tested. Find the place where our protocol accidentally tells nature how to behave. Find the circular derivation. Those are useful results.

We have no interest in protecting CF from failure. If something breaks, we want to know exactly what broke and what measurement broke it. That is considerably more valuable than defending the name.

The shortest version

We went looking for the source of AI drift. We discovered that eliminating drift would also eliminate imagination. So we began separating possibility generation from epistemic authority. That required a logic of warrant. Building that logic exposed assumptions hidden inside ordinary nouns.

We began removing those nouns while preserving the measurements. That produced Consequential Formation and CRR. Now the subtraction has reached causality, transport and spacetime. We did not set out to dismantle anything. We are trying to find out what nature actually forces us to put back.

Protect every measurement. Protect none of the vocabulary. And if the whole thing eventually collapses under a measurement we cannot satisfy, we will have learned exactly where the floor really was.
